The bigger question for me beyond character traits which are very often way overblown... is can he do the job on and leading up to game day. In game management, understanding down, distance time on the clock, possessions, scheming for specific opponents, adjustments, player development... A lot of this rah rah BS at the podium pales in relation to actual job proficiency. he apparently had the right stuff as the DC for the team. perhaps the question should be will he get out of the way on the offensive side? defensively it appears he is the real deal Did he? Did he call the plays or did Stevie? That is why he is such a big unknown. We don't even know if he called the defense. We only know that he and Stevie together = DC.

It seems his qualifications were he took a trip to Israel with Bob and said all the right things. It's not to say he can't do the job, it's just that he's a total unknown. This is why I'm remaining open and non judgmental until I see the results.

Exactly. That was my point. A sounding board is hardly someone who is going to be running the team or making key decisions. The consortium is building multiple listening / feedback points to aid in decision making. I would’ve wanted somebody with prior head, coaching experience as a sounding board. Slater may be great. But he has zero You don't have 1 sounding board. If you are smart you have many and you have them for different subjects. Slater for personnel development.

he was not calling the plays on the sideline. SteveB was But Mayo was coming up with the plan and teaching it during the week. He was teaching, he also had the greatest defensive mind of the 21st century supporting him and creating the actual gameplan. This is a massive departure from managing the entire game, all the coaches, developing young players and ruling over it all. Other far more experienced coordinators and assistants have failed when given their own ship to steer, it’s not negative thinking to question whether Mayo has the chops to do so. We’ll see…
