it appears that "bend but do not break" indicates that BB also does not care about yards allowed, only about points 29th in the league in giving up big plays. 30th in points allowed. No biggie. Those are big improvements that need to be made. Think they will make it to top 15 by the end of the season in points allowed? Let's keep track of next 6 games and see where they stand compared to first 6 games. Where they end up for the year, I don't know and don't care. What I would like to see is for them to improve and become one of the league's stingier defenses in points allowed for the second half of the season and into the playoffs.

That's how I look at it too. Their poor numbers early on are going to be a drag on their rankings all year. I will look at the second half as being more telling of where they are.

I'm inclined to agree that how the D progresses is infinitely more important than where they rank come year's end.

Statistically, the D has been average other than in the two losses (where it was very bad). Yards given up do correlate well with points given up, so you can never say that giving up yards is benign. It is true that the correlation between yards given up and points given up is less strong for the Pats than for the NFL overall because BB's defensive philosophy is to defend the LOS, defend against the big play deep, force the opponent to move down the field slowly with a lot of short passes, then stiffen up on the compressed field in or near the red zone. This defensive strategy fails, however, if you start giving up big plays or if your red zone defense is weak. If that's the case, giving up yards is going to correlate more strongly with giving up points . . . and I'm afraid right now that's the case. We looked a bit better against Tampa and the NYJs, but I'm also skeptical about the quality of those offenses. We'll see. I like McClellin coming back. I think the LBs have been a particular weakness this year and I'm hoping McClellin helps improve that group.

I think I might get a little wet if I tried to drive to Germany. Doesn't your golf cart have a roof on it? Yes, and sides as well, but the ground water of thousands of feet deep might pose a slight problem.

Last 2 weeks D average 16 PPG.
You stat nerds want to average all games. Why? That's dumb.
You want a snap shot comparison to other teams or closer to fact?
Teams evolve so you weight recent games as more telling along with history and roster.
This team is better than the dumb stats and poor performances.

another factor to consider when analysing the evolution of the whole team throughout the season (and the D in particular) is the fact that BB foccus so much in match preparation vs the specific opponent for a given week
begining of the season, there's very little tape to evaluate teams, so it's more difficult to find weaknesses and strenghts, preseason tapes are of little help since most snaps come from players fighting for roster spots and not the starters, and even in those involving starters there's always the issue of less intensity in a pre season match
later in the season, more tape is available, so it becomes easier to identify the soft spots where you can take advantage from

Along with the simple reps , cohesion, confidence element that defense needs to succeed. History, roster , guys coming back are all good trends for this D.
