Below are some thoughts I had while watching the ESPN and NFL Network broadcasts of Rd 1.
***First, some gripes***
-Where do they find the "fans" to fill the crowd? Are they paying them? Most don't even know who their team is drafting and just clap like a seal when any name is mentioned over the loud speaker.
-I miss the days of Radio City Music haul being stuffed with draft nerds, who knew players, and would boo as needed.
-The entire extravaganza is feeling more and more like an NFL commercial. I get it, it is, but it continues to feel more produced and forced for me.
-They keep trying to ram the "Black National Anthem" down peoples throats. I don't have any problem with the song, but I do have a problem with them playing it at functions, as if it sends some sort of positive message. We already have a national anthem.
-You can tell which players have a father figure in the picture, as they appear to be the ones who aren't walking around like Bernie from Weekend at Bernies, with a goofy pair of over-priced sunglasses on... inside.
-And, take off your fvcken sunglasses when you're talking to someone on national TV. Heck, I saw one dude walk over to give a fellow draft a high-five, with his sunglasses on, knowing he'd be on camera... then take them off as he was walking back to his seat in the greenroom.
-Also, where Michael Penix Jr's. sunglasses even for adults, or men? They looked like something a female toddler would wear, while shitting in their diaper in a sandbox.
-If you prohibited prospects from saying "blessed", "let's go!", man, bro, and "ready to work", would most of them even be able to forma sentence?
-I love how everyone is in the moment, and not playing around on their phones the entire time.
-The footage of the forced "War Room/Collaboration Station" bro hugs and circle jerk after every pick is kind of cringey. It's like they wait for an announcement that they're live, and... ACTION! Also, there's no way every dude in every room is stoked about every pick, but they try to make it seem that way.
***Now, some positive/random!***
-Gotta love when a Make-A-Wish kid gets to live out his/her wish.
-Stoked for Michael Penix Jr. to be drafted as high as he was. He does seem like a good dude, and hopefully he won't have to wait 3-4 years to get regular playing time.
-I think 5-10 years from now, when we look back at this 1st round class... the best player from it will either be Joe Alt or Brock Bowers.
-Quinyon Mitchell just looks like an NFL DB to me, and I think he's gonna be fantastic in the league.
-You could argue that Ricky Pearsall ended up in the best situation of any Rd 1 pick... the same could be said for Xavier Worthy.
-Drake Maye sounds phonetically like Gronk.
-JJM couldn't have landed in better position/situation.
-The first fourteen picks show you just much of a premium is placed on offensive in today's NFL.
-Detroit is angling to stay good for a while... and I hope they're in the SB this season.
-Da Bears have added some serious offensive firepower this offseason... if they can put it all together, look out.
-I call bullshit on the idea that Sean Payton felt as strongly about Bo Nix, as he did about Patrick Mahomes.
