Thought Cluster #1: The Pats Missed Key Opportunities
This year’s haul was headlined by Drake Maye. While I preferred Penix, I am just glad they picked one of the top 6 QBs. I am skeptical about this pick, but hopeful.
However, IMO Maye should take over the starting role after the halfway point of the season. If he proves to be ready by then, great. If not, the staff would have a chance to see a clearer picture of his improvement areas for the 2025 season. Ultimately, I expect him to be fully installed in 2025, as the starting QB; a top 10 QB in 2026.
On the other hand, I have been openly sour about them picking a WR in Rd 2, when there were four LTs available. It does not matter that you are looking at LT7, LT8, LT9, LT10. What matters is if they are good enough to be graded as Rd 2 picks. Obviously, Grier and McDaniel, who have built a playoff team, thought Patrick Paul was worth a Rd 2 grade. Caserio and Ryans thought Blake Fisher is a legit Rd 2 guy. John Harbaugh thought Rosengarten was worth picking in Rd 2, despite having Ronnie Stanley who’s a better LT than anyone on the Pats roster. Andy Reid thought picking Suamataia in Rd 2 could help improve his team, who BTW just won the SB!
LT is a foundational position. WR is not. LT is a scarce resource. WR is not. I believe in hoarding scarce, foundational resources, before worrying about SHOs.
Stating the obvious – time will tell. But there will be no vindication for the Rd 2 pick until we see stability at LT. The collaboration deserves to be ridiculed if any of the four LTs they passed on plays a significant percentage of snaps at LT to help their teams gain playoff spots.

Thought Cluster #2: LA Chargers Had the Best Draft in 2024
R1P5 OT Joe Alt R2P34 WR Ladd McConkey R3P69 LB Junior Colson DE Justin Eboigbe (No. 105) DB Tarheeb Still (No. 137) DB Cam Hart (No. 140) RB Kimani Vidal (No. 181) WR Brenden Rice (No. 225) WR Cornelius Johnson (No. 253)
Their draft picks, on the O side, suggests they have a coherent theme in how they would like to build the O – they wanted to help Herbert by balancing their offense.
Both OLs they acquired over the past few days were bigger than anyone already on the team. Picking Joe Alt at R1P5 was a bigger surprise than a lot of people care to admit, given incumbent LT, Rashawn Slater has been pretty good (PFF 76.6). LT did not seem to be an urgent need that warranted a R1P5 selection. Until the week of the draft, most mock drafts had the LAC picking a “weapon” for Herbert (Bowers, Nabers, Odunze). Somehow, over the last few days before the draft, mock drafts from different outlets herded towards having the LAC picking RT JC Latham. LAC’s depth chart on ESPN now has Alt at RT. It may take a few games before he fully takes over at LT. When he’s ready, the LAC could trade Slater for picks.
With McConkey, they added someone with the route-running ability to become a reliable slot receiver. That gives their passing yardage balance – translates to them having the ability to gain 5-yard chunks on early downs at high rate of success.
Considering they did not pick a defensive player until the third round, they did very well on that side too. They added a couple of players who could have been drafted much higher on a normal draft class.
With their third pick, they selected Junior Colson – the kid who scored the most tackles on that MI defense. In the fourth round, they acquired Justin Eboigbe – a grossly underrated 297-lb DT who racked up 64 total tackles in 2023 (that’s more than a lot of LBs).
Prediction: They will finish second in the AFC West; and get a wild card playoff spot.

Thought Cluster #3: ATL’s Error Could Turn Out to Be a Good Thing for the Team… a Little Over Year from Now
It didn’t matter that three other teams wanted to trade up to get Penix, validating their Rd 1 grade on him; selecting him at R1P8 just after giving Cousins a $180M 4-yr deal was stupid. I am not buying the claim that it was all part of a plan to sit Penix for two years, while Cousins plays out the guaranteed part of the contract. But this could still turn out well for them by around June-July in 2025.
The QBs in next year’s draft class will not be regarded as highly as this year’s. Top QBs in 2025 will include: Carson Beck (Georgia) – I have not watched much of him. Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) – Kyler Murray 2.0. A lot of Colorado players transferred out. Quinn Ewers (Texas) – Could lose significant number of snaps to Arch Manning Jalen Milroe (Alabama) – Would you draft in rd 1 a QB who plays for Alabama? A QB who runs on 46% of his snaps? Cameron Ward (Miami via WA St) – How will he look in a news system? Drew Allar (Penn State) – How does he respond to losing his LT Olu Fashanu?
A lot of teams will be desperate for a starting QB in 2025. By then, Penix would have already learned everything he must to be able to start in the NFL. ATL will be in a position to cut ties with either. On the other hand, Cousins and Penix could each have very high trade value by around June-July of 2025.

Jim Harbaugh is officially my spirit coach.
But, while the Chargers might kick ass on the field, what are they doing about anti-semitism? Never mind racism.

Because Wolf and the scouting department seem to think he will be able to play there. I wondered that too, so I took a quick look at Wallace vs Michigan and compared him to Patrick Paul vs Texas.
Looks like Paul is definitely a better OT than Wallace. But Wallace seemed decent and definitely not a bust.
LT? Not sure. LT's need quick feet. You can see Paul has quicker feet and seems like a more agile big man than Wallace.
But the more I watch Wallace, the more I think he can be a starter for the Pats.

How does this stat make you feel? The only relevant stat would be his performance playing LT snaps. Show me that.

Show me that. that’s fair, but the kid can block some of the best at the line, I think his tape is pretty good. Gonna trust the scouting department or that Wolf and Co simply decided LT wasn’t gonna work out this year and they’ll get that next year. Why they couldn’t spend money on FA for vet is beyond me though, why wait till the draft for such an important position especially if you know you’re drafting a QB?

How does this stat make you feel? I prefer to watch the video than reading the stats. Wallace played well against Michigan. But he let up some pressures and had trouble with a couple spin moves.
He's just not as good an athlete as Patrick Paul.....that seems clear from watching the 2 videos. I admire that the Pats coaches can look at that and conclude they can work around Wallace's limitations and make him a LT.
Maybe he slims down a little and gets a little quicker.
