Okay, I know it's not the most pressing question. But there are 32 teams, 7 rounds, and usually 32 compensatory picks, but 33 compensatory picks this year to make up for the Patriots lost pick. So by my math, (32 X 7) -1+33=256. But Mr. Irrelevant is 253 this year. I'm confused.

Any other team penalized a draft pick as a consequence of a fair and impartial investigation by the league of integrity? Only explanation I can think of.

Did KC lose a pick this year or next for tampering? Let me re-phrase... Did RG randomly decide he felt like docking KC a pick this year or next.

Not sure, but last year there were 256 picks as the formula predicts, so clearly something happened. I do know that they gave out an extra compensatory pick to make up for the pick the Pats lost, so that's not it . . .

Okay, one down . . . must be some other lost picks. I now wonder why a compensatory pick was added to make up for the Pats' lost pick but not for the lost KC pick. Odd.

Okay, I found the answer (Google is a wonderful thing, isn't it). As you say, jri, KC lost a pick for tampering. Atlanta also lost a pick for the crowd noise scandal. And finally, LA used its pick in last year's supplemental draft (I guess you forfeit a pick in the upcoming draft if you pick a player in the supplemental draft).
Not sure why compensatory picks weren't awarded for the KC and ATL lost picks.

Okay, I think I've solved the problem. Despite most stories I've read saying the 33rd compensatory pick was a make-up pick for the pick the Pats' lost, it appears actually to have been an extra compensatory pick that management and the NFLPA agreed upon for the Bills or Dolphins related to the Dolphins rescinding the transition tag on Oliver Vernon. Exactly why or how that was awarded I have no idea, but I think it's very unusual for extra compensatory picks beyond the normal 32 to be awarded.
