Chung is due more than 1.1M Yeah I am big fan of the Athletic but Howe seems to offer 2 lazy takes above. This is Chungs contract..."Patrick Chung signed a 2 year, $6,400,000 contract with the New England Patriots, including a $3,000,000 signing bonus, $4,100,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $3,200,000. In 2020, Chung will earn a signing bonus of $3,000,000, a roster bonus of $800,000, a workout bonus of $50,000 and a incentive bonus of $150,000, while carrying a cap hit of $850,000 and a dead cap value of $7,716,667." The 2020 year is pushed to 2021 because of the opt out. Idk if Chung already received his signing bonus for 2020 or not, but it's irrelevant because that money was paid for future performance. His base might only be 1 million, but we need to get a 4 million+ dollar performance back or it was bad deal. If he is cut, it is a worse deal. Judging by the fact Chung turned in his worst PFF grades a pro in 2019(by far with a 50) then it was probably a bad deal. His dead cap hit tells the tale. Also I don't understand Howe's opinion that Cam's shoulder was "shot down the stretch"? First time I heard that. Ask Damiere Byrd if his shoulder was bad when he dropped a wide open TD against the Bills. Also of note, the only reason Byrd could get wide open was because of a trick play flee flicker. Stands to reason, if we had more guys getting open downfield(better players) Cam is capable of hitting them in stride. We just didn't have them.

hindsight being 20/20, even though I went ballistic when the signing was announced, having Dugger and Phillips on hand, the Chung extension might be in BB's top 5 worst deals signed. most likely still #1 is the Brady incentive laden contract where Brady did not make any of his incentives.

As I recall (it wasn’t that long ago), the Chung extension was to create much needed cap space. Space that was needed to sign draft picks. They were down to peanuts and obviously Bill’s crystal ball failed to see Covid and all the opt outs coming.

It runs to 37 because of the opt out but also because the last couple years are not terrible if they have to let him go. Basically they overpaid him for one year to get the cap space. It’s not as debilitating as most seem to think and if he hadn’t opted out they’d be saving money this year by letting him go. Now they’re stuck with him this year.

Too bad Rashard Higgins is such an Olympic class meathead because he’d be an intriguing less expensive WR possibility otheriwse.

Was just about to share this too. Good article! If we want to get back to a BB defense it has to start with great LB play. Hightower is no guarantee to be an effective lber in 2021. He could very well be a cap casualty. I don't see him taking less money to play football.

For a 33 soon to be 34 year old safety who turned in a 50 pff grade in 2019. It's not as debilitating as say...getting rid of a great QB prematurely, but it still makes no sense whatsoever.

The facts are it was a one year deal that they did to open cap space at that moment when it was needed. Yes, he was overpaid but in year 2 (which would have been now) they could let him go and actually save cap. But, he opted out and here we are. Gotta keep him this year.

Muzz, you are wrong about year 2. there is almost $3m in dead cap space they could have released any number of players for cap space. extending Chung was a mistake we also learn the only reason they franchised Thuney was to keep Brady. if the lines of communication were better, they could have not franchised Thuney, and signed some weapons. they then could have extended Brady lowering his 2020 cap hit

Stuck with him this year. Next year, they can move on. Understand that dead money only matters if it exceeds the cap hit?

I think it makes sense, this will not be a one year turn around. I agree and that's why it was a bummer to read. I think they are most likely correct in their assessment. It's another reason why it will be so interesting to see whether Bill acknowledges this or not. I don't think he did last year(signing Mccourty's franchising Thuney, extending Chung) Bill believed he could and really wanted to win post Tom Brady. Does he now go in a different direction(young and cheap to build for future) or does he extend Gilmore and High, sign a few big name FA's and trade for a vet QB?

please, if the right moves are made, an nfl team can easily be back in the playoffs in a year, 2 at most. no matter how bad they were prior. now, to be true title contenders it may take a bit more time... not sure if this article is implying itll take that long to be dynastic again (thats never happening btw) or just to get back into playoff and thus having a chance at a title, contention.

NOT WITHOUT A GOOD QB! Never said that was or wasn’t the case. It’s clear that position trumps all others but if we can find a solid or better qb and make the other necessary adds then they can easily be in the playoffs next year and title contending again shortly after that

It’s clear that position trumps all others but if we can find a solid or better qb and make the other necessary adds then they can easily be in the playoffs next year and title contending again shortly after that in theory the team could both sign a QB in free agency AND draft a QB to develop if they feel Stid is not that guy. they have the draft capital and the cap space to do both I agree next year they could/should be a contending team depending how they use that capital. the difference between 7 wins and 10 wins is only a handful of plays, an easier schedule and better health.

while the bar is set very low, the Pats have to have a better free agency signing period than the Red Sox. Would someone please wake up Chaim Bloom and tell him the team needs pitching
