Gronk made the number. No one should be wearing it.

Ben Coates was a pretty damn good 87. Gronk will get his red jacket that's all any Patriot great needs.

Build him a statue but leave the number available.

40 yards? Healthy Gronk or Healthy Coates. I'll take Coates. He could fly for a TE, at 250 LBS. Born 10 years too early, imagine Coates, in the 2000's, with us? So glad he got a Ring with the Ravens. That 96 team was a Bad Ass team.

Ben Coates was a pretty damn good 87. Gronk will get his red jacket that's all any Patriot great needs. Why a red jacket? The British wore red - the Patriots wore blue. The Patriots for the most part sucked in those red uniforms - and crushed it in the blue uniforms. So, why the red jackets? They should be blue jackets!! As for #87, the Patriots should not have scrubs running around in that jersey. Set it aside, until the number is officially retired - as it should be.

There's only so many numbers, they need to stop retiring all numbers and put them all in circulation.
Patriots HOF is the honor.

From this era 12 and 87 should be retired, two of the best players ever at their positions

ive always thought that retiring numbers is silly... if you want, hang a banner or sign with the players name... and as someone suggested, put them into the team hall of fame. if we never started retiring numbers years back, no one would be whining about it now.

That 96 team was a Bad Ass team. I’m a HUGE Coates fan, but if I had to chose between the two?? I don’t know, probably a tie. Coates was just so quick/fast for his size and he was absolutely money between two defenders over the middle. Yet Gronk was bigger/taller, a better blocker, probably better runner after the catch, more physical. Yet Coates seemed more athletic, polished as a pass catcher, and he too was physically imposing. Imagine these two together?? My lord! But you bring up a great point, you can’t retire the number because of Gronk, Coates needs to be part of the equation...and maybe they never should retire it? Just let it be known that tight ends (legendary tight ends) wore that number, and they will need to continue with tight ends wearing it, only. So take it away from the rookie WR. Edit — As much as I love Coates, I guess I do have to put Gronk ahead of him. Darn.

When you retire one number you forget your Teams History. Been around since Day 1. Seen many good ones. You can't play any favorites if you love your team.

They shouldn’t be the Celtics and retire everybody, but 87 was worn probably by the greatest tight end ever, for a pretty long period of time here…that one should be added imo

Makes me want to build a Madden dream team (theme team?) with nothing but Pats players. Gronk and Coates in a two tight end set would be unstoppable.

To me, that's a far better legacy than it being retired. More interesting. You want to retire 12, fine. But that should be it and as much as I loved Nelson, Hannah, Bruce Armstrong, Mike Haynes and Tippett, those numbers should be available too.

Lifer is a good Poster, don't mean to sound like a A-Hole. Just like certain players, Coates is one that to me never gets enough love from Patriot Fans.

Do not, I repeat, do not follow the Celtics example of retiring every number under the sun. And it didn’t stop there, with the comical ‘Loscy’.
It’s a slippery slope once you’ve started and as you start down the slope you’ve diminished the true legends.
