I'm curious to know what peoples thoughts on this play was. Matthew Slater was pushed out of bounds, and then ran 30 yards downfield while out of bounds being mirrored by two defenders trying to keep him from coming back in bounds. Eventually he managed to get past them, and not only make the tackle on the kick returner, but also forced a fumble. Ultimately he was called for unsportsman like conduct (which seems as far from anything Slater is capable of as possible). The call was costly as not only did we not get the ball, but a 15 yard penalty that TB was able to ultimately capitalize on by putting more points on the board. Edleman was calling this complete BS, but the announcers last night seemed to think it was the right call. Did we get robbed or was that legit?

Based on the way the rule is written it is the gunners responsibility to get back in play as quickly as possible. I've seen it called before so unfortunately I think they were within the rules to make the call.

It was the right call

As much as I hated to see a flag at that moment, especially against Slater who is an all time Special Teams great, it was the right call, imo. He doesn't cause that fumble if he tries to get back in bounds sooner. I think Belichick saw the replay and didn't even get pissed about the penalty being called. That tells me a lot right there.

Right call. You can't run 30 yards down the sideline before going back in. He didn't even try to go back in. Love the guy but that was a boneheaded penalty.

What’s screwed up about that play is the Bucs players are out of bounds most of the time as well trying to prevent Slater from getting back in bounds. Guess that’s allowed? Seems to me if he has to get back to the field they should have to give ground.

That was the right call, TB players couldn’t touch him until he was inbounds, so he decided to just run out if bounds. Of the two overturned fumbles, this was the one the refs got correct

Did not make enough effort to get back inbounds. Correct call.

To my eyes the replay clearly showed he richly deserved the penalty. Guys get pushed out of bounds all the time... the MUST make a concerted effort to get back ontho the playing field. Slater made a rookie mistake and just ran downfield till he was easily able to slide back onto the field. Uncharacteristically poor play.

He didnt even fake an effort.... he just ran downfield till he could slide back onto the field. It is on him.
