Fitz made $82m in his career mostly as a back up. fwiw, simply from the outside looking in at the situation, he appears to be a guy that would be great in the booth on Sundays. smart, current, witty, extremely knowledgeable.

Although inconsistent through out his travels from team to team, the guy had heart. Just never got to the elite level. I respect the guy for someone who played with some grit, whether he had the physical talent or not.
Respect.

this may not come out the right way, because I also respect Fitz's career. but for such a smart guy, he seemed to play dumb in most every game I saw him. always made a dumb pass, int's, ill conceived QB runs... he almost tried to play hero ball with none of the physical skills needed

He might have but that's a stretch. He averaged $82/17 $4.8 million/year in the NFL. He might have had more fun with his economics career though. He never made the playoffs.

I can never think of Ryan Fitzpatrick without imagining all the toast crumbs he's probably had to comb out of his epic beard over the years. Give Fitz credit for longevity, but seriously ... how many times did you look up and say, "That guy is still in the league?"

What I found interesting was that almost every season he started he had at least a stretch of 'Fitzmagic' winning a string of games that given the talent on his teams he shouldn't have won. Those string were generally followed by whatever was the opposite of fitzmagic where the wheels fell off and the team bus crashed. He was a short term solution for bad teams to put up respectable results, just not someone that was ever seen as a player to build around. I can't think of a time he was starting for a good team.

Book smart does not equal QB smart. I think he had a hell of a career. Much respect for the way he played the game. Not afraid to mix it up and get dirty for a QB. How many Harvard grads make more than $82M in their career? I would guestimate very, very few.

If he didn’t have the majestic Santa beard he may have gone unnoticed. Good luck Fitz. You never caused any off field issues. The only bad things you were in the news for was your play.

He was fun to watch play because he played with the attitude of nothing to lose. He would have some great games and then a streak of horrible games. And that's why he was a backup QB. Still fun to watch, funny guy off the field.

Gardner Minshew is ready to fill his shoes. Will have the same career. Never quite becoming the franchise anywhere but will have his moments of brilliance followed by not brilliance. Famous for facial hair, personality and clothing choices. Will have a long career, play for numerous teams and make a lot of money. The torch is passed.

Back when Fitz was a Bill, I remember reading an article about him (maybe it was Sports Illustrated?) which ranked him in the top ten smartest athletes in sports. Not in football, mind you, but all of sports. He was always a class act. Not a top ten QB, by any stretch, and in some respects he epitomized the Bills' long drought era. He played just well enough, for just long enough, to soak the Bills for a $59M contract that he could not live up to.
But, all his flaws aside, he remains a Bills Mafia favorite, and out of the nine teams he played for, the feeling is mutual, stating: "Without a doubt, Buffalo was my favorite place to play." He's my favorite QB of the Bills drought era, and to be honest, I always kind of hoped he would sign for a short stint in NE, just so that he could have played for all four teams in the division. (And he was, after all, a Harvard grad.)
Godspeed, Fitzmagic! The NFL is poorer (and dumber) without you!

There's talk that he'll get signed to a one day contract by Buffalo, so that he can retire as a Bill. That would be a nice tribute to him: profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/06/04/will-ryan-fitzpatrick-sign-a-one-day-contract-with-the-bills/

I've heard that talk, but I'm not sure any of it is coming out of One Bills Drive. It would be nice if it happened.

"I think Tom Brady is the greatest champion, but I think Peyton is the greatest quarterback to ever live."
I consider that a fair assessment.

Only one stat that matters in the end. Brady beat manning to be that champion.
