Love it. Veteran player who can play all over the secondary. Probably plays a decent amount at FS this upcoming season. Belichick continues to absolutely dominate the offseason.

This guy echoes the move to safety. Curious to see what types of coverage shells they roll with this season, and/or if they score a true single-high/cover1 type.

Yeah, time will tell as their current personnel suggests a lot of cover 2 or 3, and 2/3 of the snaps being in zone. If they land a capable man corner with size, and a rangy FS, then I think man/cover 1 snaps could increase.

He didn't cover well last year when he played, not sure how much of that was injury related, although he is a better safety than corner.

DMC’s replacement.

In other words, the team probably wanted to restructure his contract prior to his release, he declined, was cut, saw little interest, and came back on a friendlier deal. I guess we'll find out soon enough. I'm all for this. While I don't view him as anything special, I'd rather have him on the roster than off it…until someone proves they are better.
[EDIT] It looks like he was never officially cut, so this is technically a renegotiation…no doubt spurred by the declaration he was going to be cut.

Dammit….was hoping that JonJones was 5aken out of cover responsibility …with Mills at safety ,,,Jones will be asked to (and fail again) to cover receivers.

Sure, putting him on the outside against 6'4 receivers, he's not going to be great. Few guys are. Jones always puts the Hills of the world in a box. Jonathan Jones in the slot Jack Jones CB1/2 1st/2nd round pick CB1/2 Marcus Jones as CB4/gadget player That's a good group, with a ton of depth at safety to offer a variety of looks - Dugger, Philips, Peppers, Mills, etc.

As long as Jon Jones is tasked with covering WR’s his size and not 6’3” receivers that’s a good thing. Actually, I was technically wrong…and so are a bunch of articles and headlines. It looks like he was never officially cut by the team and this amounts to a re-structure, not a re-sign. It was more like a "we're going to cut you" but they renegotiated prior to that happening.

It was more like a "we're going to cut you" but they renegotiated prior to that happening. Which saves the dead cap hit from cutting him and makes this about the same in terms of money as what he had been on - the change I assume will be in NLTBE incentives which will lower the cap hit in 2023 - simple one is game day incentive since he only played 11 games last year, the per game bonus would be NLTBE for games 12-17.
Interesting looking at the draft scout numbers between Mills and DMC - very similar. Mills ran a terrible combine 40 and then ran 4.47 at his pro day. DMC was 4.48 and all the other numbers were similar. A 29 yr old Mills is probably as faster than a 35 yr old DMC was. Doesn't have the experience of DMC but has played pretty well as a safety.
Wonder if this cools interest in Rapp, and whether it was seen as a trade off between the two.

meh for me Mills has trouble staying on the field. even when healthy, I am not sure I am taking Phillips, Dugger or Peppers off the field to play Mills. does bring a ton of versatility and in a pinch can play anywhere. probably a good upgrade to MBryant. but DMC replacement? I am not on board with that yet. I need to see more

Will we make moves (such as moving Mills to safety) to soften the blow? Sure. Will we eliminate the blow? Unlikely.

I think it’s a grid move to keep him, some of the free agents they were bringing in made me question why...because they all seemed like in the box safeties...and we already have a number of them. At least this guy can be moved around and cover a little bit.
But here again, the Patriots squeezed some money out of a player...how does that work in the locker room this year? Seems there’s a lot of “rebuilding” that needs to be done in that locker room...a lot of fences needing mending. Does something like this help? I have no idea, maybe I’m off base in the thought process, but who knows?

I would think the Pats told him they were going to release him if he did not renegotiate, so he could go out and find a better deal for himself. he did not. really not a squeeze?

have to wait for the wording on the deal, but seemingly the Pats now around that $10m in cap space once everyone is accounted for. they will need approx $3.5-$4m to sign their draft/udfa players. they historically (although not recently) prefer around $7m in space to operate thru the season.

The slot is a tough position to succeed at and he reminds me of Arrington as in always trailing , very seldom on the receivers hip. On the outside, whether regardless of size, he is always trailing.he may have speed but not showing it. Nice player as he was a udfa, but a reserve is all he should be.

You can disagree all you want, he’s going to be 30 years old this season and been in the league the better part of a decade. He is well regarded as one of the best slot CB’s in the league, he has held great smaller WR’s like Tyreek Hill in check. It’s not my opinion but the consensus among anyone familiar with NFL football. No offense but you’re the same guy that’s been telling us for the last decade Devin McCourty was washed up and overpaid. You seem to have an axe to grind against DB’s, I’m not sure you understand how difficult their jobs really are.

I want to say, at one time, he was one of, if not the fastest player on the team. opposing QB completion % against him last season was 52% opposing QB QBR against him last season was 73 he played 16 games last season and his stats say he missed 7 tackles he played 84% of the defensive snaps and 27% of ST snaps the Pats have now moved on him 2 times very early in the process to extend and then again resign him has been a border line pro bowler at slot/inside cb, and played the #1 outside cb role last season once Mills went down Pats cb's tend to play underneath, inside hip, with help over the top in either single high coverage or Tampa 2 coverage. I find it hard to find fault in the player. glad he is back

DMac was good no doubt, but as free safety imo he sucked..he was last line of defense and way too many deep balls completed and he wa# no where to be found. Oh I understand the difficulty of the position but if you can’t do the job, upgrades are needed. It was my opinion and I stand by them
