Boom. Was waiting for this. Takes the pressure away from worrying about the safety position in the upcoming draft. Great news!! Transition tag rules!!

Glad they locked him up. Might have overpaid a little but we keep a very good player and don’t have to worry about finding a player to take his position.

I see serious differences between the Kraft / Eliot Wolf management of the Patriots salary cap and the rest of the AFC East.
First, Eliot Wolf is a tortoise. His game is to wait for useful players to drop into his lap, apparently at discount rates, between late last month and perhaps next October. At this point Spotrac lists the Pats as #1 in the NFL in 2024 cap money at $47 million (the #16 average team is $17 million) and #1 in the NFL in total 2024-2026 cap money at $423 million (the #16 average team is $224 million). The Bills, Phins and Jets were salary cap hares. Their 2024 cap rankings are #27, #28 and #31. Their 2024-2026 total cap money rankings are #29, #28 and #19. So, the other three teams have gotten more to cheer about for several months until the actual season approaches, but then all sorts of disgruntled players might slide to the Pats. Kyle Dugger was a rather slow signing -- he had ample time to shop himself around the NFL.
Second, the Bills, Phins and Jets all had to move significantly backward this year. A team can either have a dependable, experienced player signed to a position (and a dependable backup signed to each backup position also) or else they can have a plan in place for that spot, which in truth means they have a big question mark penciled in at that spot right at this moment but maybe they'll hit the Powerball, you never know.
Right now the defensive coordinator for the Patriots in 2023 is now the head coach, the Patriots' new DC was promoted from within and the entire defense is pretty intact from last year. Few if any defensive question marks have been penciled into the roster. This D is most likely going to be murder in September. And now, there's Kyle Dugger in place, hopefully for four more years.
The offense needs plenty of work but Onwenu, Sidy Sow and Strange seem to be in place, with up-and-coming second year drafted possibilities coming along behind them. Hunter Henry is signed. Rhamondre Stevenson carries the rock. Eliot Wolf found a third down back. The current backup quarterback is familiar with the old Patriots system at least, although Alex Van Pelt will probably lay in his own different type of offense. The new quarterback is a question mark but we'll see.
I expect the new QB to sit on the bench for at least a while. Assuming that the Patriots make the playoffs, a possibility if the other three AFC East teams all start out with way too many question marks and then they further fall apart with attrition, that hot new QB may be leading the team in January so look out!

Yes!!! Why sign two or three great players who are difference makers when you can sign 6-7 backups.... cuz that's who is left in free agency.
