14-2 is guaranteed. I have to laugh at the loss predicted to Oakland in Mexico City. No way that’s going to happen, if the Patriots are getting beat on long routes, those won’t be available at 8,000 feet.

Sitting in the "throne room" this morning I happened to gaze at the SI NFL preview edition and took note of the title: "The Patriots' Problem". Well, that problem was definitely not the one SI thought would happen to the NFL didn't it? As I see it, the start to this season was the best thing that could have happened to a team given how all the press clipping spoke of an undefeated season, they would favored in every single game and they were just about handed the SB52 trophy. Opening the season losing the way they did to the Chiefs, the D playing at a historically bad level and the offense just not clicking brought some reality to the team. Injuries notwithstanding, the team needed a dose of humility to know it has to show up every game. Some players had yet to show up, Allen for one. Fortunately, though, team play seems to be trending upward with the performance against the Falcons. Brady saw the lack of commitment and hard play in that first game and said so in his presser afterwards. Starting the season 2 - 2, which could have easily been 1 - 3 if not for barely winning the Houston game, may have been the best thing to happen to this team and get the players' heads into the game. Granted, there are still 9 games to go, but, I do not see some of the dire predictions of an 8 - 8 or 9 - 7 record after those first few games come to fruition. I can see this team running the table now with maybe one more loss. A tough beginning toughens a team, doesn't it? I totally agree with this. No doubt the performance was frustrating, but how remarkably we slipped out of all the over-expectations! That is huge considering that we are the defending SB Champions, but more persuasively, we have been to 7 AFCCGs back to back and 3 SBs, while winning 2. That is like land of milk and honey for BB.

K. That one was a head scratcher. Maybe by then if the Pats are 13 - 2, even though Fletch does not even have them at 11 wins by then, have clinched home field throughout the ACF playoffs and rest everyone.

I wouldn't characterize it as the best thing that could have happened to this team. Being behind KC for the seeding is a bad thing. Of course that could change. I don't think this team cares one whit about press clippings with Billy looming over them. I think they just had some new pieces that needed to assimilate and a general lack of being organized on D. Recall that we have won 3 SBs after starting the season at 3-2. Maybe not the "best thing", that would be winning the SB! A better choice of words may be "wake up call" but at the time it was the best thing to happen when it did. As for overall team attitude, who knows if some of the press clippings creeped into a few players heads and BB straightened them out pronto. Also, with a 1/3 of the team turned over from 2016, assimilation took a bit longer than some liked since they aren't the Borg!!!!

I thought the team made greater strides in improving after the Bucs and Jets wins than they did with the KC and Carolina losses.

Games 5, 6 and 7 offer more improvement time than right after games 1 and leading up to game 4 against Carolina. Just took more time than we liked. Besides, even though the D stunk in the Carolina game recall how many times the D did make a stop only to have a penalty give Carolina new life. Those were the killers.

Brady was talking to himself with those comments after the first game as much as to the others...
But yeah the team was getting its shit together for sure.
