Sitting in the "throne room" this morning I happened to gaze at the SI NFL preview edition and took note of the title: "The Patriots' Problem". Well, that problem was definitely not the one SI thought would happen to the NFL didn't it?
As I see it, the start to this season was the best thing that could have happened to a team given how all the press clipping spoke of an undefeated season, they would favored in every single game and they were just about handed the SB52 trophy. Opening the season losing the way they did to the Chiefs, the D playing at a historically bad level and the offense just not clicking brought some reality to the team. Injuries notwithstanding, the team needed a dose of humility to know it has to show up every game. Some players had yet to show up, Allen for one. Fortunately, though, team play seems to be trending upward with the performance against the Falcons. Brady saw the lack of commitment and hard play in that first game and said so in his presser afterwards. Starting the season 2 - 2, which could have easily been 1 - 3 if not for barely winning the Houston game, may have been the best thing to happen to this team and get the players' heads into the game. Granted, there are still 9 games to go, but, I do not see some of the dire predictions of an 8 - 8 or 9 - 7 record after those first few games come to fruition. I can see this team running the table now with maybe one more loss. A tough beginning toughens a team, doesn't it?

by the agc...your general point is spot on and I agree. starting the way they did may be a golden goose.
also here is my gut feeling
at charger--win--toss up--6-2 at Denver---toss up...pats win 7-2 at Oakland--loss 7-3 home phins-win--8-3 at buff--loss-8-4 at phins---win---9-4 at pitt--loss--9-5 home bills--win--10-5 jets home--loss-10-6

Going undefeated requires not just skill but a lot of luck. But 14-2? Why would that be idiotic? Had Edelman not been injured I'm pretty confident we'd only have 1 loss right now. I'm not even willing to say it wouldn't have made a difference in the KC game. We didn't just lose our top WR, losing a guy like that temporarily demoralizes a team.

Injuries are the wildcard though. I doubt we'd have two losses had Edelman not gone down.

I fail to see any positives in any losses
I will still go with 11-5 or 10-6
some tough road games ahead

I admit to predicting 14-2. Baseless? What was their record last year? Did they win the SB? DId they make what appeared to be some big positive moves with Cooks and Gilmore? Since a whole lot of people were favoring them strongly it is HARDLY baseless. And yes I am dismissive about 9-7. How far off will you need to be for you to say it was a stupid prediction? 11 wins? 12 wins?

I would think any prediction between 9 amd 13 wins legit
I found the 16 win predictions ridiculous. This is the NFL and on any given Sunday any team can win out. there are no easy games. Cannot look past anyone.

It will take more than one good game vs a team that doesn't seem to be as good as predicted to convince me things are getting fixed. I see a 11-5 season, not bad but not as good as most predicted prior to the season starting. This game vs the Chargers will be very interesting game. Charges should be 5-2 right now if it wasn't for their terrible kicker which cost them 2 games, they ended up dumping Younghoe Koo. They made the Broncos look terrible last weekend. I think this game this weekend will let us know if the D is working things out or was it just a good game vs an over rated Falcons team? I liked what I saw, I think the win was a little of both. Lets see if Oline can protect the onslaught of Bosa and Ingram, and if Josh McD can be creative on offense.
Nobody worries me out of the NFC but to get to the SB this season there are several tough AFC teams the Pats will have to beat. Chiefs, Raiders, Steelers, Bills, Chargers, Texans... it's going to be tough to get to the SB this year.

I think that facing adversity early in the season is a very good thing. I feel like Belichick likes it that way too. Too much success early can lead to complacency. I feel like the season is just too long to get hot in September and stay that way into February

The beauty of the first-place schedule is that you get to see all the teams during the regular season that you're likely to see in what I call the actual season (which happens in January). I'll admit to being one of those Wake-Me-Up-at-Christmas guys who has looked at the regular season as a necessary inconvenience for a good long while now, and I'll agree with bill that a little slap in the face might not have been the worst thing for a team that may or may not be guilty of taking its press a little too closely to heart. It's pretty idiotic to think -- for instance -- that you can't see anything good in any loss. That's just tardbot thinking. Each game is a learning experience and if you don't find value and gain some kind of positive from the days you don't play your best, then you won't ever get better ... and I expect the Pats to be quite a lot better in January -- comparative to the potential competition -- than they are right now. No ... losing isn't good, but that does not mean it has no benefit.

Fletcherbrook, I do not recall seeing any predictions for 9 - 7 or 10 - 6 records for the Pats before the season began from this forum. The most common predictions were for either 13 - 3 and 14 - 2. The onslaught of 10 - 6, 9 - 7 and worse began after the 2 - 2 start. Not being dismissive at all. Anyone who predicted 16 - 0 had everything crossed when they made that prediction. It is one thing to predict before the season than another to jump ship when the going gets tough. Did you think they'd be 5 - 2 now after that start and after the Falcons' game. I do not think so since you tend to be one of the more negative folks here.

As with the Falcons, lots of hand wringing pre-game which turned into high fives as that game progressed. Many were not expecting that performance, yet, we are now seeing some excuses being made about the Falcons not being as good. Well what is it? Either you truly think the Pats are good, if not getting better, or not. If the Pats were to play the Chiefs and Panthers again, would we still think they lose? Those two games were absolutely horrible defensive games. Anyway, 7 games in and we are seeing typical Pats football with the team slowing getting into gear.

I wasn't referring to you being dismissive...the other cat...I dotn think 14 wins is ever something one can predict with any sort of fact based algorithm. too many variables uncontrollable. I was just saying that as foolish as 9-7 or 10-6 may seem to some 14,15,and surly 16 seem to others. yes I am negative ...coping mech.;0 and tomanswr your question....NO FKN WAY DID I THINK THEY WOULD BE 5-2 AFTER FALCONS... I thouhht birds would drop 40+...very very solid defensive run the last 8-10 qtrs. I was wrong big time.
I would not be shocked to see 11,12 wins...9? maybe...some shock. 10 is where I feel safe as far as basing it on the 3 or 4 toss up games remaining could go either way. in the past they have ALWAYS GONE our way...this year has felt different so I'm not sure.

I wouldn't characterize it as the best thing that could have happened to this team. Being behind KC for the seeding is a bad thing. Of course that could change. I don't think this team cares one whit about press clippings with Billy looming over them. I think they just had some new pieces that needed to assimilate and a general lack of being organized on D. Recall that we have won 3 SBs after starting the season at 3-2.

Oh, I was one who thought the defense would get destroyed by the Falcons and I was very impressed by the Pats defense during the game.. stated both those thoughts on here prior and after the game. But you go back and take into consideration that the Falcons should have been 2-3 coming into this game (Lions got robbed, imo) and the lack of creativity they showed on offense this season, with exception to the Packers game, and it's not one where you say... they're back! No, far from it, we will have to wait and see how quickly they come back from the pathetic defense weeks 1-6. The Chargers will be a nice test, ultimate test will be Raiders and Steelers. I think they could beat the Panthers in a rematch right now but not the Chiefs, certainly not now.
