Final 2016 Patriots Mock Draft
60) Bronson Kaufusi DE BYU I think that a DE with length and size is needed in the departure of Jones. Kaufusi is a very strong player who will hold up well on the edge and can use his great length to get 50/50 sacks and tip passes. He is also a high character guy who would fit in well in NE. I've been high on him for quite a while and I hope Belichick is as well.
NE trades #61 & #204 to NO for #78, #112, & #152
78) (via NO) Hassan Ridgeway DT Texas Ridgeway is a plug and play DT who will trive as a penetrating specialist. He has excellent physical traits for that role, at 6'4' 305 lbs, and his best football has come when he played alongside Malcom Brown. Why not pair them up again?
NE trades #91 for 2017 3rd and 4th Rnd picks to KC
96) Sean Davis CB/S Maryland Davis is a guy who NE has been tied to, and the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. He has an excellent combination of size/speed/agility for defensive back and has the versatility to play just about anywhere in the secondary. I think his best position is on the outside as a CB, and that's a good thing because NE needs depth there and has to plan for the possibility of losing Logan Ryan after the 2016 season.
112) (via NO) Kyle Murphy OT Stanford Murphy is a good pick. He's a solid OT who can play of the Right or Left side. There's quite a bit for Scar to work with from this kid, and he will be a valuable piece to NE's offensive line. Murphy could be ready to be NE's starting RT in 2017 if Vollmer departs.
152) (via NO) Spencer Drago OT Baylor NE double-dips on OT's as they select Drago here. Drago doesn't have quite the upside of Murphy, but he is a little more pro-ready now, and more versatile. He can fill in at just about any OL position as a rookie if needed, and he has a bright future as a RT if Murphy ends up on the Left. Good value with both of these guys.
196) Demarcus Robinson WR Florida He's very talented but comes with quite a bit of baggage. He's dealt with numerous failed drug tests and got booted of the team at Florida. There are plenty or Red Flags here, but if Belichick believes that the kid has kicked the drugs, he may give him a chance at the point. Robinson is terrific running after the catch, and I think his talent here would be outstanding if he can stay clean and focused. Big time risk/reward player.
208) Daniel Braverman WR W. Mich A board favorite by many, but I have been hesitant to really jump on the bandwagon. I love his quickness and route running ability, but I worry about his durability as a pro. His frame just looks light to me, and I don't know how much muscle he can gain. His poor explosion tests are also worrisome. That said, I can envision him as a great player in NE if he can stay healthy. I think NE will have interest and I think they would take a chance on him here.
214) Alex McCalister DE Florida Hey look, another Gator! Belichick loves drafting these kids. He doesn't care if their track record isn't good. McCalister is a 2 year project, most likely. He has elite length and athleticism, but his frame is very light for college, let alone the NFL. He really needs 30-40 lbs of good muscle. If he can get into a pro program, though, stay focused and train hard, he could develop into not only a starting caliber DE, but a very good one. He really has big time upside, but it will take time. New England is good at being patient with kids like this. I think they could be interested in this guy
221) Cody Kessler QB USC Kessler has the size and arm to succeed in the NFL, but his college tape is spotty. At times he looked very focused and very good at USC, but he made a lot of mistakes as well. He's a good guy to bring in and develop, especially with Brady being out for the first 4 games.
242) Wendell Smallwood RB W. Virginia I'm thinking that BB just isn't as worried about the RB position as the fans are. Most people think that BB will be hot after a big, lead RB, and I think that he would take a guy like Derrick Henry if he were to fall to him. I don't think that he will reach, though. Smallwood is more like Dion Lewis. He is a very good pass catcher, has great quickness, and plays bigger than his size. He isn't a 20 carry per game RB at all, but I could see him bumping White or even Brown off the team. Good insurance in case Lewis has to start on PUP.
250) Anthony Zettel DT Penn St This draft is very deep at the DT position, so it makes sense to grab another one late. Zettel should be drafted higher, but do to the high number of good DTs available, some good talent will be available very late. Good depth guy who will push for a roster spot, and probably win one.
UDFAs:
Dwayne Washington RB UW There is also some sneaky good RB depth this year. I don't think BB will reach for a RB because he will be able to land a decent player late or un-drafted that can split carries with Blount. The 2017 class is set to have some potential franchise RBs, so it wouldn't surprise me if Belichick trys to find a stop-gap RB who can combine with Blount to get them through the 2016 season. Washington is a sleeper to watch. He's got good size and speed, but fumbles have been an issue which is why he may be around as an UDFA.
Destiny Vaeao DT Wazzu Very disruptive DT at Wazzu, but at 6'2" 295 he's a bit undersized. He is quick off the snap, though, and finds the ball quickly. Good prospect to get a look at in camp, and he could knock Kearse or Kuhn off the roster if he catches on.
Cre'Von LeBlanc CB FAU Smaller CB, but aggressive player with quick feet. CB is another deep position this year, IMO, and I'm sure BB will look for talent late.
