Danny Shelton was a Cleveland Brown, and the Browns generated zero reputation in the three seasons that Shelton played. The Browns went 3-13, 1-15 and 0-16. Shelton may have individually been ok but he came cheap.
Nate Solder was a New England Patriot for the past seven seasons. The Pats went to the AFC Championship Game every last season. Then they went to the Super Bowl four times and won twice. After the quarterback, a good left tackle might be the second most important position on the average team. Solder may individually have been less than Superman but he's going into free agency riding a killer win-loss reputation. You want to win? Get Solder at whatever cost.
Worse, there's a dire shortage of good left tackles this season. Solder is just about the entire auction market. Bid, bid, BID, BID!
The Pats realize that Solder is 29 and that he might wear down a bit in the future. They don't want to re-sign Solder at an impossibly high salary until he's age 35. Scar prefers young guys that he can mold. The starting offensive line after Solder is all so-so draft choices:
David Andrews: undrafted Shaq Mason: back of fourth round Joe Thuney: middle of third round Marcus Cannon: fifth rounder
So, just an educated guess, Nate, we thank you for your seven years as a Patriot. Your family needs financial security, a big guaranteed check coming from somewhere.

I think he stays for less than market. I don't say that often, but that's my gut feel here. If they give him a fair offer, he'll retire a Patriot... I also think the health and treatment of his son will play a role in that decision.

I think Solder is probably gone but it's not done yet, so I'm holding out a sliver of hope. Teams are spending big right now so the hometown discount is looking awful huge.. It seems Tom Brady may have resigned himself to that because he included mention of Amendola and a call to Gronk in his latest show but I don't think Solder got ac all

I agree especially about his son's health.Does Solder want to take him out of the hospital environment he's used to and have him start all over again at some other place? He has an established routine.I have to think that's a huge factor for Nate to figure in. I wish him and his family the best whatever he decides to do.

I don’t go off of hunches much but I have a feeling the Pats offer a fair contract, lower than what he would get elsewhere, and remains a patriot for a few more (2-3) years. I just don’t see him wanting to start over somewhere else at this point of his life, knew team, new city with his son’s health issues. I could be totally wrong here and I’ll admit it now, just a gut feeling.

They absolutely need to draft a tackle with a high pick if Solder is not back. In fact, if he is not back, I would rank that need higher than CB (not higher than LB though)

I'd like another good cb, but its not a dire need and falls behind (in no particular order): LT, TE, DE, LB, Pass rushing DT, SS and RB.

It's all up to how Solder is valued... There will be a couple of teams that will overpay as usual.. Nate will get a fair offer from the Pats and if he wants to move that's his choice.. He has made a pretty nic salary over the years so he shouldn't be hurting.. The Org. Has supported this player thru his issues with his son so there should not be hard feelings of any kind .. If it comes down to a couple of Million a year and he leaves then it truly was about money and my feelings are Shame on Him... But I feel he will stay and retire a Pat.. He has been a good soldier and a very good player even when he wasn't playing well he was still good enough..

Port: Babe, its early. Go back to sleep. Babe: The truth never sleeps homer... Port (ignoring Babe): anyway... LT becomes #1. I think the only thing that changes that is if Solder signs OR the coaching staff differs with me in thinking Fleming or Waddle will blossom into a LT and not just a RT. And by the way, I would like to see one or both of them back but not for LT money.

IMHO (emphasis on the H) re-signing Solder has got to be the organization's number 1 priority. Absent someone at LT who can keep Brady upright that offense is toast.

I know his son gets great treatment here but keep in mind he is getting treated at a hospital (not exactly a comforting place to call home). There are other hospitals in major city's...some of which are considered to be excellent as well. And unfortunately his treatment is pretty universally standard - there is no magic formula that they are stirring up in Boston - he can receive the same treatment in any major city. So I think to say Solder will stay because of his son is quite a bit of a stretch. Now will he need assurances from a team that his son comes first and he'll need time off to spend at the hospital with him (like the Patriots have given him)? Yeah I think that will be a priority...and I think any team courting him knows that going in...and will gladly accommodate his needs.
So it comes down to...how much will he lose by staying here? How much do they actually like living here? Don't be shocked if they actually WANT A CHANGE of scenery. I believe his son did get sick here...then got treatment here...then went into remission here...then relapsed here. Some people would want to get out of a place where all that happened. It's like living in a house where all these bad things kind of happened to you, some people actually would look forward to moving.

The key is if you set yourself up to need additional millions because of the life style you chose and that is the mistake many pro athletes make. Many do not think the long haul and live like they'll make millions every year for their entire lives.

The key is if you set yourself up to need additional millions because of the life style you chose and that is the mistake many pro athletes make. Many do not think the long haul and live like they'll make millions every year for their entire lives. Exactly, now let's say you make $150,000 a year and your wife makes $100,000 a year. What most end up doing is they live within that $250,000 range, in THAT lifestyle segment. What that could mean is they may have themselves a $2,500 a month mortgage, or slightly more. They may both be driving Lexus's adding another $1,000 a month to themselves in car payment. Their home insurance and car insurance may add another couple hundred bucks a month to them. They probably go out to eat once or twice a week...spend $15,000 a year on vacations, maybe belong to a health club and/or golf. Maybe they own a boat or summer place...or a timeshare up at Loon. Whatever it is they are most likely spending in THEIR annual salary range. A guy like Solder who is making seven figures annaually is spending in HIS salary RANGE. That may include owning a 12,000 square foot home (with property taxes over $35,000). That probably includes owning four $100,000 plus dollar cars. It includes having a nanny, house keeper, chef and personal assistant. It means buying your mom a house, your brother a car and paying for his kids to go to college. It means donating a couple hundred grand a year to charity. It means owning multiple homes around the country (and globe)...and paying people to maintain those homes. Hell it even means paying someone to stock the fridge and bar for when you arrive. It means flying on a private jet. It means that you want to sustain that lifestyle for as long as humanly possible - that means you can't/don't turn down millions upon millions for a "hometown discount", when the "hometown" is 2,000 miles away from your actual hometown and family.

From Pats Pulpit:
The New England Patriots have a long list of unrestricted free agents to be. Among the players scheduled to hit the open market tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. ET is the team's starting left tackle, Nate Solder. And as the clear-cut best option at his position on the free agency market, the 29-year old is expected to garner considerable interest.
So far, the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos are among the teams to take a close look at Solder. Today, a new one is emerging according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin:
Source says Browns are making a big run at Nate Solder to replace Joe Thomas at left tackle. Patriots are going to have some stiff competition. Browns have a ton of money to play with
Cleveland has been active all offseason long and already added former Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry via trade. Now, it seems as if the team is taking a swing at stabilizing its left tackle position – one that is in potential flux with the above-mentioned Joe Thomas unsure about his future.
One advantage the Browns have when compared to the Patriots is cash: While New England currently has around $21.2 million in salary cap space, Cleveland is $83.6 million under the NFL's threshold. A potential bidding war for Solder's services has the Browns as the favorites – at least in terms of financial capabilities.

"The Browns have been waiting patiently for Joe Thomas to inform them of his plans, whether to retire or play another year, but they still don't know if he'll tell them today. One source said, "I don't think so.'' Because of Thomas' status as a 10-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer, the Browns have taken the position that he deserves to take all the time he needs in making his decision.Another source close to Thomas, when asked when he'll make his announcement, said "not yet.''
The Boston Globe's Ben Volin also reported Tuesday that the Browns are making a "big run'' at Solder, the Patriots' seven-year starting tackle and Tom Brady's blindside protector. But the Browns don't know if they have a starting job to offer the veteran left tackle, and they'll likely have to pay Solder about $14 million a year. Guard Andrew Norwell just signed a free agent contract with the Jaguars for $13.3 million a year. Thomas, 33, would be the highest-paid offensive lineman on the Browns at about $13.5 million for 2018 if he returns. Surely, they don't want $27 million tied up in the left tackle position, especially if one of them would be on the bench.
Thomas told the Browns he'd let them know of his decision before free agency so they could find his replacement. But so far he's been mum. The "legal tampering'' period opened on Monday, and the Browns anticipated they'd know of his plans by then."
As per the Cleveland Plain-Dealer

If he decides to pay would a sign and trade work easier on the cap assuming the no huge signing bonus involved?

As much as I'd hate to see it happen Solder would be a fool not to go for the money. But, to some people money is not the ultimate decider. I believe Solder is a spiritual man and he may hold some personal values (such as stability, winning, how his wife feels about moving etc.) in higher regard than money. I hope this is right.

A Solder for Thomas swap? that would be fun, wonder if something like this has ever happened before? If Solder were to sign a deal that involves guaranteed money with New England and was then traded, the Pats would be left with dead money. Not sure what would be gained by making a trade anyway? If the teams were inclined to make that happen, then just let Solder sign with Cleveland and let Thomas go to sign with the Pats.
