Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere if so, I apologize. But I have been wondering if the Pats spending big money on Onwenu and stating they plan to play him at RT, is an indicator that they feel comfortable to have Penix' blind side covered with a quality tackle? If so, LT becomes a little less of a need (although still very much a need). Thoughts?

Thoughts? something to consider, but I do not believe the two are related. keeping Onwenu as the leader of the line and a locker room leader were this new management teams priority, regardless of QB. upgrading the OL was a must. who better to spend on than Onwenu? sends a distinct message as well, after Shaq, Thuney, Karras all left, that the team does value prime OL play. left or right henaded QB, Onwenu was a priority to keep

Wasn’t he the only one of the top six who they didn’t interview or attend his pro day? If so, that’s a sure sign he’s the one.

One of the few reasons I don’t love Penix, you have to reshuffle the o-line and get them in sync with the fact the QB is left handed. Seems simple but it really isn’t and we don’t have some great o-line with cohesion and experience together where that’s the only thing they’d need to “learn”

I’d be all for Penix if they think they can get him at 11 or later. Too many questions about Maye at 3 and I just don’t see franchise QB in JJM.

If can overlook penix’s lack of accuracy in his shorter throws, minimal ability to escape the rushes, an injury history he may be a pick in; rd 2.

I like Penix at say #11 more than I like Maye at #3. Also, with Penix, targeting him might signal a change to a more vertical, down the field passing offense (not sure they have the personnel to do that as things stand today), as that's where his strengths lie.
JJM is still my guy in this class.
In order of preference I'd go:
JJM Daniels Penix Jr. Maye Nix

setting Williams aside, strictly the past 2 seasons on the field, Penix does not need to take a back seat to anyone. he has been the best or 2nd best QB in college football. his prior injury history and his age are two considerations. but in the right scheme, with some players around him, he could be the best of the bunch.

If we don't stay at #3 and take Penix, I might dissappear from this board until I recover from it. Lol

Pats in radio silence on Penix Really loud about taking JJM I think that is your shortlist of QBs they are considering.

Penix would immediately be one of the best downfield throwers in the league. That can’t be coached.

Penix would immediately be one of the best downfield throwers in the league. That can’t be coached. All we need now is a line to protect him to buy him enough time to throw downfield and a couple of receivers that can get downfield in a hurry. Other than that, we are all set.

I wouldn’t go that far yet. Do we know anything about AVP besides he was fired by the Brownies?

My order of preference is Maye, Daniels, Penix, JJM.
You don't compromise on a QB selection just because it's tempting to maybe get option B plus something else. There is nothing else, this organization will be a joke until they find the QB.
However, if they aren't convinced they know who is the future franchise QB, then Penix who might be more NFL ready is appealing as you might be able to get him and fill the rest of your holes. Especially if you got Penix at 34. Imagine getting the Vikings 2 firsts and a second and you pick Penix at 34? That could be the making of a quick rebuild.
Again, not my preferred choice, but tempting.

Pats in radio silence on Penix Really loud about taking JJM I think that is your shortlist of QBs they are considering. That’s exactly the thought process of what I’ve been hearing/reading, it’s lying season and the Patriots are in full pre-draft lying mode. They are now being rumored to be lying about their infatuation with McCarthy to get the Vikings to trade up for him. They are also said to be doing the same with Maye, and getting the Giants to trade up for him (although there is the thought they will just take Maye if he is there). And lastly, they are in total radio silence over Penix, which is an indication HE is the guy they really want, or will trade down and concede for. Of course recent history tells us that trading down can also backfire and blow up on your face…and nothing the Patriots have done over the last 3-4 years makes me believe they would be immune to that. I think Calib Williams goes number 1, Drake Maye number 2, and the Patriots will have a lot of options sitting there with the phones ringing. One thing of interest…there’s a thought that management is afraid to not trade down because to take the quarterback at three means their entire fate will be tied to that guy (with a good chance it won’t work), and then they’ll not only be fired in a couple years, but always be remembered for screwing this up. Whereas trading down and acquiring multiple picks/assets really muddles the waters, and doesn’t make things quite as clear as to what they screwed up (especially if whoever trades up for the QB also fails). I think BB has done a great job of doing THAT in the past…trading away great players, taking picks, trading those picks into the future, taking multiple different players all over the place, and leaving a very confusing trail behind of just who/what they actually got in trade for the player they traded away. I hope THIS ^^^ is not the strategy, I want the QB early.
