Traded the pick. The offensive talent on this team is deplorable. They need young talent at multiple positions, especially LT and TE. They could have traded back and probably got a LT, TE and WR on day 1 and early day 2. I understand that position, but doesn't that all but guarantee you are stuck in QB hell? Your record improves just enough that you'll never sniff a top QB except by luck, and also never sniff a SB except by luck. Yes, mediocre QBs have one SBs. Not many. They swung big. We'll see where that takes them. I just watched 6 QB's come off the board in the first half of the draft. I don't think that's ever happened before, and there's a significant drop off in talent once you go past Bo Nix, that last taken. Add to that next year is going to be a mediocre draft for QB's. Anyone saying move back, pick up picks, load up on talent and worry about a QB later, would have condemned us to QB hell for years to come. We got the most important piece on the board, a top rated QB with an exceptionally high ceiling. That was priority number 1 in my opinion, and thankfully, the shared opinion of the people that mattered in the Pats war room.

I absolutely love the pick. Had to be done. He adds hope to the equation and this franchise had no hope without a talented QB. He is very talented. Sure, sit him 7-8 games, maybe 12…but know that you have a talented QB who should improve. It’s not about him now, it’s about him a year from now. He has the upside, he has the toughness. I thought he was maybe the best QB in this draft.

Lets keep adding pieces...like some sort of offensive talent that the previous regime completely whiffed on.

Belichick was not totally negative on Maye. One thing that he said was quite positive ‘He can make all the throws.’
Yes, I know the kid has flaws. The question is are they fixable? We’ll see.

I think he’s so talented. Sure, needs development. Sure, there’s a chance he won’t work out. But there’s a chance that every single player in the draft won’t work out. There are no sure things. Maye is a guy I’m definitely taking a chance on. I think he’s in a great situation. NE can bring him along slowly. Having Brissett and Van Pelt to help him along is a great thing. I love the pick. We’ll see how it works out, but I love the pick.

" He can make all the throws" +1000 !!!! People forget that many people throughout the college season and after had maye as the 1st or second best qb in the draft. Daniels pairing with 2 high first round wr and people over analyzing maye created the perfect caused him to fall to the pats.In many drafts he could easily have been the first overall pick and fans of that team would have been thrilled. I’m still not sold on daniels arm nor his accuracy, only time will tell. Penix was average before being paired with top talent in Washington and playing in the lack-10 conference (lack of defense). The time he faced a top caliber defense he imploded in the championship game. Let’s compare the draft talent surrounding them: USC - 9 other players besides Williams in the top 400 available prospects list LSU - 8 other players besides Daniels in the top 400, including the 6th and 23rd picks in round 1 at wr Washington - 13 other players besides Penix in the top 400 including the 9th and 20th picks in round 1 at wr and ol. There are also 2 additonal wr ranked in the top 57 players in the draft, giving them 3 wr in the top 57 players overall. Oregon - 7 other players ranked in the top 400 besides Nix including a wr ranked as the 46th best player overall and a rb at 133rd. Michigan - 17 other players ranked in the top 400 besides McCarthy including a wr, rb, and a te within the top 147 players available. North Carolina - 4 players ranked within the top 400 besides Maye with the only other offensive player being tez walker who is ranked as the 109th best prospect. He is young, athletic, has a cannon for an arm and played under pressure with inferior talent and inferior coaches compared to the other qb’s in the draft and still did well and shows room to improve and grow. Only time will tell if the team can harness his talent, but the question the doubters need to ponder is if he was on these other teams surrounded by actual talent, it is likely he would have played even better than he was at nc. We saw how limited talent qb’s who are not used to pressure fail these last few seasons, now we have a talented qb who is used to playing behind a crappy line and with few weapons. He can’t be worse than what we had, and his potential is off the charts. www.si.com/nfl/2024/04/02/takeaways-drake-maye-mccarthy-penix-nix-nfl-draft

Just saw BB's comments. A lot of negatives were about processing and decision-making. I am concerned that those are things that you cannot fix in a year with him holding a clipboard.

Let's hope that the Patriots take their time with this kid, and not throw him to the wolves - and find the right people to coach him up. Now that the Maye pick has been made, the next step is to fortify their OL.

The Patriots should not reach for a tackle or a WR. They should take the best player available at pick #34, even if it's a defender. The first round was an unprecedented run on the offensive side of the ball.

Exactly, get to work on him right away…from what we hear he’s a hard worker, he hasn’t played a ton of football - with great coaching and development we should have a guy by year two that will be one of the leagues young premier players at the most important position in all of sports.

Also watching now the exchange between Payton and BB. Interesting how the two coaches think that Nix is closest to being NFL-ready. Also interesting how BB thinks Maye did not have a lot of playing experience. I found Bill’s entire commentary misleading and a thinly veiled attempt to discredit what the Patriots did (select Maye). I found him contradicting himself. His footwork is bad? Two nights ago Brian Hoyer is on television saying footwork is the easiest thing to correct. Did Belichick make any mention of his line sucking? Or him NOT having a line like Daniels, Maccarthy or Penix? Or receivers like the others? I just found the whole thing strange.

Mac Jones was considered the most NFL ready QB in the 2021 draft. Beyond that, and separately, this is a quote from the NFL prospect profile of a current NFL quarterback: "Never had completion rate higher than 56 percent in either season as a starter. Accuracy diminishes greatly when he's forced to move his feet. May have too much hero in his blood. Tries to overcome obstacles with arm talent and makes poor decisions because of it. Takes too many chances with low percentage throws. Needs to play smarter and place higher value on the ball. Fastball pitcher whose touch could use improvement short. Will baby the deep throws at times. Field-reading is spotty. Needs to be more patient in allowing combo routes to develop. Would benefit by trading some velocity for better timing. Anticipatory throws don't seem to come naturally. Pre-snap game plan appears unfocused. Breaks from pocket without cause throwing off his timing with receivers. Doesn't keep feet "throw-ready" when sliding in pocket. Frequently defaults to off-platform throws when there is time to set feet and deliver." www.nfl.com/prospects/josh-allen/3200414c-4c52-9264-bedc-c4ddaf201fe7

These are the things I would work on with Maye: First quicken the release, he had the slowest release of the QBs. Then improve accuracy, missed lots of easy throws. Everyone knows about the feet. Don't run into pressure. several former QBs have noted Maye's feet/throwing mechanics (needs to shorten his throwing motion). Not sure that it is an "easy" fix or not. I'm in the camp that things like "poor" footwork and throwing motion has been ingrained in muscle memory - and actually is difficult to change. If it can be improved; it'll happen over 2-3 years.
Look at Tebow and Mac Jones. Both worked w/ throwing coaches. No appreciable improvements were had.
