Now that Maye has been selected, what should the Patriots do in terms of playing him in the future? Start Game 1? Sit? If Sit, how long?
I would prefer that the Patriots repeat the errors that were made with McDorkle; and do whatever they need to do to get him ready to play in the NFL, put him in a position to succeed in NFL. To make it clear, I am NOT saying McDorkle had no role in his own demise here in NE. He did not handle the situation well; and hopefully, will learn from his experience in NE, and get a fresh start with the Jaguars.
It's imperative that Mayo and the coaches surround/build an offense to help Maye - starting with an OL that can pass protect and run block, some decent clutch WRs/TE, 1 RB who can gain decent yardage at the right times, 1 3rd and long WR specialist (like James White) and a FB who can help w/ run blocking and pass protection and execute well on 3rd or 4th and short situations.
Not asking for much.....lol.

They should trade him while he still has any value. 😂

Seriously, I don’t think you can plan this. The Pats just have to wait and see how it plays out. If Maye shows he’s ready then put him out there. There’s no urgency or reason to put him in a position to fail.

They just used the #3 pick in the draft and they aren’t going to play him?
There is no Aaron Rogers playing in front of him. He is now your marquee player he better play or they should have taken someone else.

Brissett is the starter... Maye has to take the job.
This is something that happens when it happens, not something you plan in advance.

Now, hard deadlines can change depending on whether goals are met/not met along the way. Play him sooner if goals are met more quickly or delay play if goals not met along the way.

If Zappe were the only QB on roster; I could certainly justify playing Maye out of the gate. But we have Brissett; who is willing to teach this 21 year old QB the ropes thru training camp and part of the season - to get him as "NFL" ready as possible. In other words, Maye has to earn his start - and beat out Brissett. Should it be any other way?

This isn’t a Mahomes/Alex Smith scenario or a Rodgers/Jordan Love situation. This is the 3rd pick in the draft and your now marquee player. They should have traded out or selected somebody else.

Play him sooner if goals are met more quickly or delay play if goals not met along the way. If Brissett is playing great and the kid still needs work on his mechanics, you aren't pulling a vet player playing well. There's no plan to play him by week 8, he either is ready or he's not, and when he's ready it will be visibly apparent in practice.

Well, those who said that no matter what the Pats did there would be happy fans and unhappy fans were right. Start him when he is playing better than Brissett and not a minute earlier. Unless this really was the 2nd coming of the 1983 draft, just sit back and hope Maye is one of the one or two QBs in this draft who won't suck. I liked JJM and Penix, but I'm under no illusion that I can predict QB success in the NFL with enough certainty to get upset over them not picking who I wanted.
I'm surprised nobody on this forum has pulled the "I was right about Mac so trust me, I'm right about Maye" card. Ya know, because being right about Mac means teams should now be hiring you as a consultant before every draft lol. I'm sure it's coming...

But I do believe some fans get more enjoyment out of thumping their chests about being right than they do seeing the team succeed by being wrong. Hopefully lioneljoe liked the pick. Otherwise we'll have 10 threads constantly on the front page about him. "Maye farted in church" "Maye had an argument with his girlfriend" "Kraft smiled at Maye while walking past him in the hall"...

There's no magic number of weeks to wait. It's not like we're following a recipe on the cooking channel here on how long he's to stay in the oven. When Maye is ready, and clearly displaying in practice all week that he is the guy most likely to help us win the game, the coaches are going to put him out there. The good news is now we don't need to push him onto the field, and have the luxury of allowing him more time to develop and learn the playbook.

I do believe Brissett is a legit starter. they are also paying him $8m. imo, the job is his until Maye takes it from him. Maye has played 26 games in college. he struggled in many of them. Maye is 21 yeas old. the team drafted for upside and will have patience. I do not see a day 1 starter in Maye, but I do see someone with the physical tools to be a star.

The better question is how much is the o-line, receivers and OC going to be blamed for his bad decisions.
Lol
We have already played this game.

Exactly. It’s a very good situation for Maye, and NE. There's an outcome that nobody here is considering. The Patriots pick a stud LT in the next round like Patrick Paul or Kingsley Sumiataia and they have a great line... then Jacoby Brissett plays much better than people realized he could play. When the Lions acquired Jared Goff he was considered damaged goods and called a "bridge QB" for the rookie they inevitably took in the draft. Now nobody is talking about replacing Goff, he is a similar player to Brissett... the Pat's need to build a Lion's type line and get him some weapons with their remaining picks.

Is he actually a "marquee" player? Maye is being described as a high floor, high ceiling kind of player with potential. Most pundits are saying he should sit. I don't think I've heard from anyone that he should start Game 1.
I do understand that, from your perspective, a #3 pick overall would be expected to play at nfl level by game 1 of his rookie year. But, are those expectations realistic?

Then why pick him, the 3# pick is MAJOR draft capital.

Some are saying no more than 2 years. I'm thinking 2-4 years.
